17 years ago, we fought to stop the last Labour Government closing Whipps Cross Hospital. Our MP, Sir Iain Duncan Smith led the campaign, and with your support we stopped those plans. BUT WE DIDN’T STOP FIGHTING
In 2019 we secured a commitment to the total rebuild of Whipps Cross. The trust went away to develop their plans, then COVID hit us. WE KEPT FIGHTING.
During COVID, the Trust developed their plans for the new hospital. As soon as they could, they consulted, amended the plans and applied for planning consent. In parallel they built their business case and the NHS released the funding. Planning consent was secured - at the second attempt - and after years of campaigning, construction started on the first phase of redevelopment just before last year’s general election.
Had the project been allowed to continue, we would have had our new hospital open by 2028.
Ilford North MP, Wes Streeting, is now responsible for the NHS. Unfortunately, he stopped the project just a few short weeks after the election and he has now confirmed that the Labour government won’t provide any more funding for the project until 2032 at the earliest.
WE’RE STILL FIGHTING!
We can’t wait for a new hospital – sign our petition to call on Labour to restore the funding and follow through the Conservative plans for our new hospital.
